1.2 EXPENSES
Tuition Fees: All tuition fees for international students at Canadian universities are subsidized but the amount of subsidy varies from province to province. Annual undergraduate international student fees range from Canadian C$ 9,000 to C$ 19,000 per year depending on the course of study and the province in which the university is located. Fees may be subjected to a small increase annually.
Living Expenses: The academic year in Canada is 8 months long (September – April) but students applying for a Canadian Study Permit (Visa) are advised to show evidence of allocating C$10,000 to cover living costs for a 12-months stay in Canada. However, depending on location and the student’s spending habits, international students can get by with less, averaging at around C$ 9,000 a year.
1.3 VISA APPLICATION
Foreign students can work in Canada during their studies, and after they graduate. In most cases, you will need to apply for one of the student-related work permits, which are required if you want to work in a co-op/internship placement, off campus, or after graduating from your studies (Post-Graduation Work Permit Program). Your work permit will generally be valid for the same period as your study permit. It will allow you to work off campus until you complete your studies, as long as you still comply with the program requirements and with the conditions of both your work permit and study permit.
If you want to work in Canada after you graduate from your studies, you must apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program allows students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. A work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program may be issued for the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years. A Post-Graduation work permit cannot be valid for longer than the student’s study program, and the study program must be a minimum of eight months in length. For example, if you graduate from a four-year degree program, you could be eligible for a three-year work permit if you meet the criteria. If you graduate from an eight-month certificate program, you would be eligible for a work permit that is valid for no more than eight months.
